A European Union (EU) delegation visited the Port of Colombo on September 24 and 25, 2026, to review port operations, discuss development priorities and explore the future of Sri Lanka’s maritime sector.
The delegation was led by Sven Simon, Member of the European Parliament, and Benjamin Oppermann, Policy Adviser to the European People’s Party (EPP) Group on Foreign Affairs, Security and Defence.
During the visit, the delegation held discussions with the Chairman and senior management of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA). The talks covered the port’s operational priorities, ongoing development initiatives and its role in supporting international shipping and trade.
The EU representatives also toured port facilities, including a terminal and the Pilot Station, to gain first-hand insight into operational activities and maritime services.
The visit provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange views on port development, regional connectivity and the long-term growth of Sri Lanka’s maritime industry. Colombo’s strategic position in the Indian Ocean makes it an important hub for container transshipment and regional shipping networks.
The engagement also highlighted the importance of maintaining efficient port operations and strengthening connectivity as international trade and shipping requirements continue to evolve.
The visit forms part of broader engagement between European and Sri Lankan stakeholders on maritime development and economic cooperation. Discussions on port infrastructure and operational capabilities are particularly relevant as Colombo seeks to reinforce its position within regional and global supply chains.
