Chowgule Shipyard has signed a contract with Green Maritime Infrastructure (GMI) for the construction of two hydrogen-powered cargo vessels, marking another significant step towards the adoption of zero-emission technologies in India’s coastal shipping sector.
The contract was signed during SMM Hamburg 2026, bringing together industry partners focused on advancing sustainable maritime transportation.
The two vessels, to be built at Chowgule Shipyard in Goa, will each have a capacity of 3,000 DWT and will form part of GMI’s growing zero-emission fleet. The vessels will be powered by hydrogen fuel-cell technology, supporting cleaner and more sustainable coastal cargo transportation.
The agreement highlights the growing interest in hydrogen as an alternative marine fuel and reinforces Goa’s role in the development and construction of next-generation green vessels.
Chowgule Shipbuilding expressed its appreciation to GMI for its confidence and said it looks forward to delivering the pioneering vessels from Goa to the global maritime market.
