With its next boxship delivery, COSCO, the world’s largest shipowner by dwt, will enter an elite club, becoming just the fourth liner in the world to operate a fleet of more than 3m slots.
The state-run Chinese behemoth is less than 2,000 slots away from entering the 3m teu club according to data received.
COSCO joins Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC), Maersk and CMA CGM in the above 3m teu segment.
MSC has extended its lead at the top of the carrier rankings, with its current fleet reaching 5.36m teu, up from 4.61m teu at the beginning of January, according to the latest data from Linerlytica, which is predicting third placed CMA CGM will overhaul Maersk for the silver spot on the liner podium by 2026.
