Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) Kandla is ramping up efforts to boost the methanol, green ammonia, and green hydrogen sectors, with the aim of building a large-scale ecosystem and securing a prominent place on the global maritime map, DPA Chairperson Sushil Kumar Singh announced during the 79th Independence Day celebrations.
“Kandla Port is also taking initiatives to boost the methanol, green ammonia, and green hydrogen sectors, aiming to establish a large ecosystem and secure a place on the global maritime map,” Singh said.
Highlighting the port’s growing role in India’s clean energy ambitions, Singh said DPA Kandla has been officially declared a green hydrogen hub. “The Government of India has declared Deendayal Port Authority as a green hydrogen hub, and we are aiming to promote the entire green hydrogen ecosystem, including green ammonia and green methanol. Major industrial partners like L&T, Reliance, and others are in the process of setting up giga-scale green hydrogen and green ammonia plants,” he added.
On July 31, Kandla Port commissioned a 1-megawatt green hydrogen plant, inaugurated by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal. Singh noted that the project is part of a larger plan launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who laid the foundation stone for a 10-megawatt green hydrogen facility during his visit to Bhuj on May 26. “One megawatt has been commissioned, and the remaining 9 megawatts will be completed within this financial year. This is a significant step towards the Net Zero 2050 vision for the maritime sector under the Green Hydrogen Mission,” Singh said.
During his Bhuj visit, the Prime Minister also inaugurated and dedicated multiple development projects worth over ₹53,400 crore. Kandla, officially known as Deendayal Port Authority, is a major seaport in the Kutch district of Gujarat, located on the Gulf of Kutch. Constructed in the 1950s after India’s partition to serve as the chief seaport for western India, it remains one of the country’s most important maritime gateways.
