    The Directorate General of Shipping participated in the UN Ocean Centres Stakeholders’ Workshop – Stepping Stone Towards a Safe and Sustainable Ocean Economy in India, held on 21 May 2026 at Crowne Plaza Ahmedabad City Centre.

    Shri Satish Kamath, Principal Officer (I/c), Mercantile Marine Department (MMD), Kandla, attended the workshop as the Guest of Honour and delivered a special address focusing on maritime safety, sustainable shipping practices, and capacity building as key pillars for strengthening India’s ocean economy.

    Organised under the Ocean Centres India initiative of the UN Global Compact Network India, the workshop brought together policymakers, regulators, industry experts, academia , and community representatives to discuss critical areas shaping the future of the maritime sector.

    Key themes deliberated during the workshop included:

    Safety and sustainability in shipping and ports
    Development of offshore renewable energy sectors
    Challenges in shipbuilding and maritime skill gaps in India

    The discussions underscored the importance of collaborative engagement among stakeholders across shipping, fisheries, industry, and research institutions to promote safe, resilient, and sustainable ocean-based development in India.
