The Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen capacity building, policy implementation and innovation across India’s shipbuilding ecosystem.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Shri Sushil Khopde, IPS, Additional Director General of Maritime Administration, and Prof. Shrikrishna V. Kulkarni, Dean (R&D), IIT Bombay. Shri Ravi Kumar M, Deputy Director General (Coastal), and Shri Nikhil Kumar, SS-cum-DDG (Tech), were also present.
The collaboration supports the Government of India’s vision under the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, which aims to position India among the world’s top five shipbuilding nations.
Under the MoU, DGMA and IIT Bombay will explore and support initiatives related to the Shipbuilding Development Scheme (SbDS), student internships, industry exposure, research collaboration and knowledge development. The partnership is expected to bring government policy, academic expertise and industry requirements closer together.
The collaboration comes at a time when India is seeking to expand its domestic shipbuilding and maritime manufacturing capabilities, alongside initiatives such as the proposed Coastal Cargo Promotion Scheme and Container Manufacturing Scheme.
The DGMA–IIT Bombay partnership is expected to contribute to the development of a stronger and more innovative shipbuilding ecosystem, while supporting India’s broader objectives of building a resilient maritime economy and advancing the vision of a self-reliant and future-ready Viksit Bharat.
