    Energy In Motion (EIM) has inaugurated its second heavy-duty battery swapping-cum-charging station at the Nhava Sheva Distribution Terminal (NSDT) under the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), strengthening electric freight infrastructure at one of India’s busiest container gateways.

    The new facility forms part of EIM’s planned EV Megaplex at JNPT, which is being developed to support the wider electrification of port and associated freight operations. JNPA has set a target of achieving a complete energy transition by December 2027.

    Second facility follows growing EV fleet

    The new swapping station follows EIM’s first E5 battery-swapping facility at JNPA, which the company says has already reached its operational capacity. Nearly 150 EIM electric trucks are currently operating within the JNPA complex, indicating growing demand for charging and battery-swapping infrastructure for heavy-duty port vehicles.

    Battery swapping is particularly relevant for high-utilisation freight operations because depleted battery packs can be exchanged for charged units, allowing trucks to return to service without waiting for conventional in-vehicle charging.

    EV Megaplex to support 700+ trucks

    The planned EV Megaplex is expected to comprise three battery swap-cum-charging stations, along with a dedicated service station, driver training centre and heavy-vehicle simulator. EIM says the wider infrastructure will eventually support more than 700 heavy electric trucks operating across key terminal corridors at JNPT.

    The integrated approach is intended to bring energy infrastructure, vehicle servicing and driver training together at the port. Faster energy replenishment can help reduce vehicle downtime, while the service infrastructure is designed to support fleet availability as electric truck numbers increase.

    Electric freight expands beyond port movements

    EIM is also extending its electric freight operations beyond dedicated internal port movements to include container freight station (CFS) movements. The expansion involves coordination among EIM, JNPA, terminal operators and logistics service providers.

    The company is deploying slot-booking and slot-optimisation systems to integrate electric trucks into high-volume freight operations. Such systems can help coordinate truck movements with freight schedules and battery availability, an important consideration for round-the-clock port logistics.

    Supporting JNPA’s energy transition

    The second station represents another step in JNPA’s broader effort to reduce emissions from port-related transport. EIM’s existing electric-truck operations and expanding swapping network are aimed at creating an alternative to diesel-powered heavy vehicles for container movements.

    The company’s own project information describes the JNPA development as a key part of its broader model combining electric heavy vehicles, battery swapping, charging infrastructure and digital logistics support.

    With the second swapping facility now operational and the larger EV Megaplex taking shape, JNPA is positioning itself as a major hub for electric heavy-freight operations, while EIM seeks to scale its zero-emission truck fleet and supporting infrastructure across the port ecosystem.
