In a significant development for India’s multimodal logistics and cement transportation, the first rake carrying cement in specialised tank containers has been dispatched from MP Birla Cement’s Mukutban Plant (RCCPL Private Limited) to CONCOR’s Turbhe Terminal, Mumbai.

The inaugural movement marks a pioneering step in the use of dedicated CONCOR cement tank containers, designed to ensure safe, efficient, and environment-friendly transport of bulk cement by rail. The rake was flagged off in the presence of senior officials from Container Corporation of India Ltd. (CONCOR), Central Railway (Nagpur Division), and representatives from MP Birla Group and RCCPL’s Mukutban Plant.

This initiative represents a major milestone in promoting seamless multimodal logistics by integrating rail and road networks, reducing handling losses, and supporting India’s sustainability goals through lower carbon emissions compared to road transport.

The use of specialised tank containers offers a cleaner and more efficient alternative to traditional bagged cement transport, improving turnaround time, product quality, and operational safety. The partnership between CONCOR and MP Birla Cement demonstrates a shared commitment to innovative logistics solutions, enhancing supply chain reliability for the cement sector.

The movement from Mukutban to Turbhe underscores the growing role of rail-based cement logistics in serving major urban consumption centers while decongesting highways and reducing the logistics cost per tonne.

With this milestone, MP Birla Cement and CONCOR set a benchmark for the future of bulk cement movement in India — a model expected to be replicated across other plants and terminals in the coming months.
