Marking 10 years of the “Make in India” campaign, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday unveiled a series of transformative initiatives by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) to modernise the country’s logistics ecosystem.
Under the Strengthening Multimodal and Integrated Logistics Ecosystem (SMILE) programme, DPIIT, in partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), has introduced Integrated State and City Logistics Plans. The first phase will cover eight cities across eight states.
According to the Ministry, these plans will help map existing logistics infrastructure, identify critical gaps, and create a roadmap to lower costs and improve operational efficiency. The exercise will eventually be scaled up nationwide.
The measures are closely aligned with the National Logistics Policy (NLP) and the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, both aimed at boosting supply chain resilience and building world-class multimodal connectivity. Several states have also rolled out their own logistics policies and action plans in sync with national objectives.
DPIIT said the initiative underlines the government’s resolve to create a future-ready, globally competitive logistics sector that can strengthen India’s trade competitiveness and support economic growth.
