Thane is set to become home to India’s first multimodal integrated transport station with the operationalization of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project. The ambitious facility is expected to attract significant investment and generate thousands of jobs, transforming Thane into a major transport and economic hub.

An international conference held on Friday brought together representatives from the Centre, Maharashtra and Gujarat governments, Japan, and local bodies to chart the blueprint for the futuristic transportation hub. A Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) official stated that the project will integrate bullet train services with conventional railways, metro lines, buses, waterways (jetties), cab and auto-rickshaw stands, and connecting roads to the airport, creating a comprehensive and interconnected transport network.

The Thane Municipal Commissioner revealed that over 25% of the station area will be preserved as green zones, ensuring a sustainable environment while offering citizens seamless access to all public transport facilities in one location.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor includes 12 stations, with four located in Maharashtra – Mumbai, Thane, Virar, and Boisar. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) representatives shared insights from Japan’s bullet train stations, highlighting how such projects have historically transformed urban landscapes.

Development plans for Thane and Virar stations are being jointly prepared by municipal bodies, JICA, and Maharashtra’s Urban Development Department, with state officials noting that the project is likely to spur transit-oriented development across the state. Comprehensive planning is also underway for stations at BKC, Thane, Virar, and Boisar, which are expected to serve as models for urban development.

The Industries Development Commissioner emphasized that the high-speed railway will attract industries to the region and generate substantial employment opportunities, marking a major step in Maharashtra’s urban and economic transformation.

The conference was coordinated by Thane’s City Development Department and reinforced the city’s role in shaping India’s high-speed rail and urban infrastructure future.
