Hambantota Port in Sri Lanka has crossed the 1 million TEU milestone in container throughput, marking a significant increase in its container-handling activity and strengthening its position as a regional maritime hub.

The milestone reflects growing demand for Hambantota’s container and transshipment services, supported by its strategic location close to major east–west shipping routes in the Indian Ocean.

The port has been expanding its role in container logistics alongside its established activities in vehicle handling, bulk cargo and other maritime services. Rising container volumes are expected to support further development of terminal infrastructure and related logistics facilities.

Higher throughput also highlights the growing importance of Sri Lankan ports in regional transshipment networks. Hambantota’s location provides shipping lines with an alternative gateway for serving cargo markets across South Asia and the wider Indian Ocean region.

The increase in container traffic is expected to generate additional opportunities for shipping, logistics and ancillary service providers operating around the port. Improved connectivity and terminal capabilities could further support Hambantota’s growth as container demand increases.

The 1 million TEU milestone comes as ports across the region compete to attract additional transshipment and gateway cargo. Continued investment in capacity, equipment and connectivity will be key to sustaining Hambantota’s container growth and strengthening its role in regional supply chains.
