The Port of Klaipėda in Lithuania is testing private 5G connectivity as part of an initiative to advance port automation and improve the efficiency of cargo-handling operations.

The trial is designed to assess how dedicated 5G networks can support real-time data transmission, connected equipment and automated systems within the port environment. The technology could provide faster and more reliable communication between machinery, vehicles, sensors and control platforms.

Private 5G networks can offer ports greater control over connectivity compared with conventional wireless networks. Low latency and high data capacity can support applications such as remote equipment operation, automated vehicles, video monitoring and digital-twin systems.

For Klaipėda, the technology trial forms part of wider efforts to modernise port operations and increase the use of digital technologies. Automation can help improve productivity, strengthen safety and optimise the movement of cargo through terminals.

The deployment also provides an opportunity to evaluate how 5G can operate in a complex industrial environment with large areas, heavy equipment and demanding connectivity requirements.

If successful, the technology could be expanded to additional port applications and support further automation across terminal and logistics operations.

The Klaipėda trial highlights the growing role of private 5G networks in smart-port development as maritime gateways worldwide invest in automation, connected infrastructure and data-driven operations.
