The India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is expected to improve market access for New Zealand kiwifruit in India, potentially lowering prices for consumers as tariffs on the fruit are reduced.

Kiwifruit is one of New Zealand’s key horticultural exports, and India represents a growing market driven by rising demand for imported fresh fruit. The trade agreement is expected to provide a more favourable tariff framework for New Zealand exporters while improving access to Indian consumers.

The reduction in import duties could help lower the landed cost of kiwifruit, although the final retail price will also depend on factors such as freight rates, exchange rates, handling costs and domestic distribution margins.

The agreement is part of broader efforts by India and New Zealand to expand bilateral trade and provide improved market access for goods from both countries. For New Zealand’s horticulture sector, greater access to India could create opportunities to expand kiwifruit shipments.

Indian consumers and fruit importers are expected to benefit from greater availability and potentially more competitive pricing as the new trade arrangements take effect.

The FTA could also encourage wider cooperation in agricultural trade and strengthen commercial links between the two countries.
