In a move to strengthen its position as the country’s preferred delivery service, the Department of Posts has introduced a host of new features aimed at boosting reliability and security. These include OTP-based delivery verification, online payment options, SMS delivery alerts, real-time tracking, online booking, and a user registration facility.

For the first time in 13 years, Speed Post tariffs will also be revised nationwide, effective October 1, 2025.

AP Postal Circle Chief Postmaster General B.P. Sridevi said Speed Post, launched in 1986, has remained one of India’s most trusted mail services despite competition from private couriers. She added that the tariff hike was essential to meet rising operational costs while sustaining service improvements.

As part of the upgrade, a new ‘Registration Service’ will be introduced for documents and parcels at a nominal charge of ₹5 per item plus GST. The service ensures delivery exclusively to the addressee or an authorised recipient. A similar fee will apply for the OTP-based delivery option.

To make services more inclusive, India Post has also announced a 10% discount on Speed Post tariffs for students and a 5% discount for new bulk customers.

Revised Speed Post Tariff Highlights (from Oct 1, 2025):

    Up to 50 g: ₹19 (local), ₹47 (200–2,000 km and above 2,000 km)

    51–250 g: ₹24 (local), ₹59 (up to 200 km), ₹77 (above 2,000 km)

    251–500 g: ₹28 (local), ₹70 (up to 200 km), ₹93 (above 2,000 km)

The postal department said these reforms are part of its continued modernisation to deliver faster, more secure, and customer-friendly services.
