India is stepping up efforts to expand defence exports, with the BrahMos missile taking centre stage during high-level talks with Vietnam. The discussions come as Vietnamese leader To Lam visits India, signalling a potential breakthrough in bilateral defence cooperation.

Sources indicate that both sides are exploring the possibility of a government-to-government deal for the export of the BrahMos system, widely regarded as one of the fastest supersonic cruise missiles in the world. If finalised, the agreement would mark a significant milestone in India’s push to position itself as a major global defence exporter.

The proposed deal is also strategically important, as Vietnam has been actively modernising its military capabilities amid rising security concerns in the South China Sea. India, for its part, has been strengthening ties with Southeast Asian nations under its “Act East” policy, with defence cooperation forming a key pillar.

Officials suggest that negotiations are at an advanced stage, although final terms, including pricing, delivery timelines, and training support, are still under discussion. India has previously extended a line of credit to Vietnam for defence procurement, which could facilitate the deal.

If concluded, the BrahMos export to Vietnam would further cement defence ties between the two countries and reinforce India’s role as a reliable partner in regional security.
