India is looking to identify and develop new overseas markets for tea as part of efforts to expand exports and reduce dependence on a limited number of traditional destinations.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening the global presence of Indian tea and creating additional opportunities for producers and exporters. The focus is expected to include markets where demand for quality black tea, specialty teas and value-added tea products is growing.

India is among the world’s major tea producers and exporters, with shipments spanning conventional and specialty varieties. However, exporters face challenges from changing consumer preferences, competition from other producing countries and market-specific trade requirements.

Exploring new destinations could help Indian exporters diversify their customer base and improve resilience against fluctuations in individual markets. Greater promotion of Indian tea, participation in international trade events and targeted market studies could support the expansion drive.

The move comes as the tea industry seeks stronger export growth and greater value realisation in overseas markets. Expanding into new destinations could also encourage higher demand for premium and specialty Indian teas.

Industry stakeholders are expected to work with government agencies to assess market potential, regulatory requirements, consumer preferences and trade opportunities before developing strategies for individual markets.
