After Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned from her post and fled the country following countrywide protests, Indian Railways has extended the suspension of trains running to the neighbouring nation.

Trains between India and Bangladesh Kolkata-Dhaka-Kolkata Maitri Express, Kolkata-Dhaka-Koaa Maitri Express and Kolkata-Khulna-Kolkata, Bandhan Express were cancelled on July 19.

The Dhaka-New Jalpaiguri-Dhaka, Mitali Express was suspended on July 21 and at present the rake of the train is in Bangladesh, so the train stands cancelled, Indian Railways said.

According to a PTI news report quoting Bangladeshi news channels Hasina was forced to quit as prime minister after massive protests against her government over a controversial quota system that reserved 30 percent of government jobs for relatives of veterans who fought in Bangladesh’s War of Independence in 1971.

The army chief is expected to address the nation shortly, according to reports.

The government earlier ordered a complete internet shutdown as protestors asked the general public to join a “Long March to Dhaka”. However, a government agency gave a verbal order to start broadband internet around 1 pm on Monday.
