India’s crude oil imports declined 3% in August, while the country’s spending on crude purchases increased 18%, reflecting higher import costs despite lower volumes.

The fall in import volumes indicates a modest reduction in the quantity of crude purchased during the month. However, the sharp rise in expenditure points to higher crude prices and increased costs for Indian refiners.

India remains heavily dependent on overseas crude supplies to meet domestic energy requirements. Refiners source crude from a wide range of international suppliers, with import volumes and costs influenced by global oil prices, refinery demand and changing trade flows.

The increase in the import bill comes as fluctuations in international crude markets continue to affect India’s energy trade balance. Higher crude costs can put pressure on the country’s overall merchandise trade deficit and increase the input costs faced by refiners.

Despite the lower August volumes, India’s refining sector continues to play an important role in meeting domestic fuel demand and supporting petroleum product exports.

The contrasting movement in crude import volumes and expenditure highlights the impact of global oil prices on India’s energy import bill. Refiners and policymakers will continue to monitor international prices and supply conditions as crude remains a major component of the country’s import basket.
