India’s defence sector has seen remarkable growth, with domestic production reaching a record Rs 1.27 lakh crore in FY 2023-24. This marks a 16.7% increase over the previous year and a staggering 60% growth compared to 2019-20. Defence exports also soared to an unprecedented Rs 21,083 crore, reflecting a nearly 35% increase over the last fiscal year.

    Visionary Leadership of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’

This achievement underscores Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative and the dedicated efforts of the Ministry of Defence under the Defence Minister’s leadership. A significant 60% of this growth is attributed to the private sector, highlighting the maturing Defence Industrial Base of India.

    SIDM’s Crucial Role
The Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM) has played a pivotal role in this transformation. Rajinder Bhatia, President of SIDM, expressed delight at this unprecedented growth, stating, “Initially, the targets set forth in the Defence Production and Export Promotion Policy (DPEPP) seemed ambitious. However, through the collective efforts of the government, the defence industry, and SIDM, we have not only achieved but are on the cusp of surpassing these goals.”

    Government Policies and Industry Resilience
The DPEPP, combined with proactive government policies and the resilience of the defence industry, has created a conducive ecosystem for innovation, research, and development. The unwavering support of the Prime Minister and strategic guidance from the Ministry of Defence have empowered the Indian defence industry to scale new heights.

    Public-Private Sector Collaboration
The synergy between public and private sectors has been a cornerstone of this success. Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) have utilized their legacy and expertise, while the private sector has brought innovation and agility. This harmonious collaboration has propelled India to the forefront of global defence manufacturing.

    Government Initiatives and Global Outreach
SIDM acknowledges the significant role of various government initiatives, including the Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) and Technology Development Fund (TDF). Additionally, the support from Indian Missions abroad has been instrumental in expanding India’s defence footprint. SIDM’s global outreach initiative, backed by the Ministry of Defence and Defence Attaches, has further bolstered the domestic defence ecosystem.

    Continued Focus on Innovation
While lauding these achievements, SIDM emphasizes the need for continued focus on innovation, technological advancements, and robust supply chains. The organization remains committed to supporting the government and the industry in their pursuit of making India a global leader in defence manufacturing and exports.

    Acknowledging Leadership and Industry Efforts
SIDM extends its gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for his visionary leadership, the Ministry of Defence for its unwavering support, and the entire defence industry for their relentless dedication. Together, they have embarked on a historic journey that promises to transform India into a global defence powerhouse.
