India’s major infrastructure projects faced a cumulative cost overrun of ₹2.88 lakh crore in August, according to data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).

The cost escalation reflects increases in project expenses compared with their original approved estimates. Large infrastructure projects across sectors such as railways, roads, power, petroleum, coal and telecommunications account for a significant share of the government’s ongoing project portfolio.

Cost overruns can result from several factors, including delays in land acquisition, changes in project scope, higher input prices, regulatory issues and delays in obtaining statutory clearances. Extended project timelines can also increase financing and construction costs.

The MoSPI data tracks central-sector infrastructure projects above the prescribed investment threshold and monitors their implementation status, expenditure and schedule performance.

Infrastructure development remains a major focus of government spending, with large investments planned in transport, energy and logistics infrastructure. Efficient project execution is therefore important for ensuring that public investment translates into assets and economic capacity within planned timelines.

The latest figures highlight the financial impact of project delays and cost escalation, while also underscoring the importance of stronger monitoring and timely completion of large infrastructure projects.
