The Government of Andhra Pradesh (GoAP) and Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) have entered into an agreement for the development of inland waterways in the State at the India Maritime Week (IMW) 2025 event in Mumbai on October 28, 2025.

As a part of it, the IWAI will invest more than ₹150 crore for strengthening inland waterways in the State, and equip the GoAP with a Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) and navigational aid.

The GoAP will allocate land for the establishment of onshore facilities for the VTMS and river cruise tourism.

Officials of the GoAP and IWAI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the IMW programme in the presence of Minister for Transport and Roads & Buildings B.C. Janardhan Reddy and Special Chief Secretary M.T. Krishna Babu.

On the occasion, Mr. Janardhan Reddy said the MoU would help in bringing down the freight transportation costs. He thanked the Centre for creating the required fairways with its own funds or in the PPP mode.
