India’s exports recorded strong growth in July, rising 19.63% to $44.24 billion, even as the country’s merchandise trade deficit widened to $31.98 billion, according to the latest government trade data.

The sharp increase in exports highlights continued momentum in India’s external trade, supported by stronger shipments across several product categories. The growth comes despite persistent uncertainties in global markets, changing tariff conditions and geopolitical disruptions affecting international supply chains.

Imports, however, remained significantly higher than exports during the month, resulting in a wider trade gap. The $31.98 billion deficit reflects the continued pressure from India’s import requirements, particularly for essential commodities, energy and industrial inputs.

The strong export performance provides a positive signal for India’s exporters and the broader economy. Higher overseas shipments can support manufacturing activity, improve capacity utilisation and generate additional demand for logistics and transportation services.

The widening trade deficit, meanwhile, remains an area of focus for policymakers. Sustaining export growth while managing import dependence will be important for improving India’s overall trade balance in the coming months.

The July figures also underline the importance of expanding India’s presence in new international markets and diversifying its export base. Continued support for exporters, improved logistics infrastructure and greater access to overseas markets could help maintain the growth momentum.

With global trade conditions remaining uncertain, India’s ability to sustain double-digit export growth will be closely watched as the financial year progresses.
