Larsen & Toubro (L&T) launched the second Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV) for the Indian Navy on Monday from its Kattupalli Shipyard near Chennai.

According to a press release, the vessel is 107 meters long, 18.6 meters wide, and has a displacement of over 3,750 tonnes.

A.T. Ramchandani, Senior Vice President & Head of L&T Precision Engineering & Systems, stated, “The successful launch of the second MPV ahead of schedule underscores L&T’s unwavering commitment to bolster India’s national security. With our unmatched in-house design expertise and execution prowess, we are committed to providing cutting-edge defence platforms to support the Indian Navy’s fleet expansion needs.”

Three months after the launch of the first MPV, INS Samarthak, INS Utkarsh was launched following an expedited production schedule. The first warship is currently undergoing preparation for testing and trials before its delivery to the Indian Navy.

    Features of the Vessel
The MPVs are highly specialized vessels with multiple roles, including serving as trial platforms for the development of next-generation weapons and sensors. They are designed for maritime surveillance, humanitarian assistance, combating sea pollution, and facilitating the launch and recovery of surface and aerial assets, among other functions.
