The grant of international status to Madurai Airport is expected to significantly boost trade, tourism and air connectivity in southern India. The move is aimed at enhancing the airport’s role as a key aviation gateway for the region, supporting both passenger and cargo operations.

With international recognition, the airport will be able to handle direct overseas flights, improving connectivity to major global destinations. The development is likely to benefit exporters, particularly those involved in textiles, agricultural produce and other regional commodities, by enabling faster air cargo movement.

Tourism stakeholders also anticipate increased arrivals, as Madurai is home to prominent cultural and religious landmarks, including the renowned Meenakshi Amman Temple.

Authorities say the enhanced status will help attract airlines, expand international routes and stimulate economic activity across the region by strengthening travel and trade links.
