Maersk is adjusting capacity on its transpacific services ahead of China’s Golden Week holiday, as shipping lines prepare for a seasonal slowdown in cargo demand.
The capacity changes aim to align vessel deployment with expected shipment volumes during the holiday period, when factory closures and reduced production in China can affect export flows to North America.
Golden Week, which begins on October 1, typically reduces manufacturing and container volumes across major Asian export markets. Carriers often respond by blanking sailings, changing vessel deployment or consolidating services to manage capacity.
For shippers, the adjustments could affect sailing schedules and available space on Asia–North America routes. Importers and exporters are therefore likely to review booking plans and transit requirements ahead of the holiday period.
The move also highlights the continued focus among carriers on matching capacity with demand amid changing transpacific cargo patterns. Maersk’s adjustments come as carriers manage network efficiency and seek to balance vessel utilisation with market conditions.
