Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) has emerged as the anchor shipyard for the proposed greenfield shipbuilding cluster at Dighi in Maharashtra, committing an investment of ₹15,000 crore to the project.

The planned investment is expected to strengthen Maharashtra’s position in India’s shipbuilding and maritime manufacturing sector. The Dighi cluster is being developed as a major industrial hub, with shipbuilding and ship repair activities forming a key part of the proposed ecosystem.

As the anchor shipyard, MDL is expected to play a central role in developing the cluster’s shipbuilding capabilities and attracting supporting industries. The project could create opportunities for suppliers, engineering companies, equipment manufacturers and other maritime businesses to establish operations around the facility.

The investment also aligns with India’s broader push to expand domestic shipbuilding capacity and reduce dependence on overseas yards. Building larger and more modern shipyards is considered important for supporting commercial vessel construction, repairs and maintenance while strengthening the country’s maritime industrial base.

Dighi’s location along Maharashtra’s coastline provides access to maritime routes and supporting port infrastructure, offering potential advantages for shipbuilding and repair operations. The development of an integrated cluster could also improve supply-chain efficiencies by bringing shipyards and ancillary industries closer together.

The ₹15,000 crore commitment represents a significant proposed investment by MDL and could support the development of large-scale maritime infrastructure over the coming years. The project is also expected to contribute to employment generation and the growth of specialised skills in shipbuilding and marine engineering.

The Dighi cluster forms part of the wider effort to expand India’s maritime economy and develop globally competitive shipbuilding capabilities. MDL’s role as anchor shipyard is expected to provide a foundation for the cluster’s development and encourage further private-sector participation.

With substantial investment planned, the Dighi shipbuilding cluster could become an important centre for India’s future ship construction and repair activities.
