Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park Maharashtra Limited (NSHIPML) to establish a major shipbuilding centre at the proposed Greenfield Shipbuilding Industrial Cluster at Dighi in Raigad district, Maharashtra.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane. MDL Chairman and Managing Director Captain Jagmohan signed the MoU on behalf of MDL, while NSHIPML Managing Director Pradeep P. signed for the company.
Under the MoU, MDL plans to develop annual shipbuilding capacity of at least 2 million gross tonnes at Dighi, backed by a proposed investment of approximately ₹27,000 crore. The facility is expected to enable construction of large commercial vessels and strengthen India’s domestic shipbuilding capabilities.
The project is projected to generate around 15,000 direct and 75,000 indirect employment opportunities and support the development of a wider industrial and supply-chain ecosystem around the shipbuilding cluster.
NSHIPML was established as a special purpose company by the Maharashtra Maritime Board and Mumbai Port Authority to develop the Greenfield shipbuilding cluster. The project is being advanced under the Central Government’s Greenfield Shipbuilding Cluster Development Scheme and is aligned with the objectives of Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
The Dighi project is expected to support technology adoption, attract investment, develop skilled manpower and enhance India’s competitiveness in the global shipbuilding sector.
