Bihar’s iconic Mithila Makhana has entered the Australian market through its first-ever sea shipment, marking a significant milestone for the state’s agricultural exports and opening a new overseas market for the GI-tagged product.
The shipment, comprising around 18 tonnes of Mithila Makhana, was sourced directly from farmers in Darbhanga and exported with support from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).
The development is expected to strengthen the international presence of Bihar’s makhana industry while creating greater opportunities for farmers and processors in the Mithila region. Makhana, also known as fox nut or gorgon nut, has gained growing global demand because of its nutritional profile and use as a healthy snack.
The first sea shipment to Australia also highlights efforts to expand India’s agricultural exports beyond traditional markets and develop more direct supply chains for value-added farm products.
The export is expected to encourage further shipments of Mithila Makhana to Australia and other international markets, helping Bihar build a stronger position in the global makhana trade.
