In a significant move to enhance accessibility and streamline certification processes for Indian seafarers, the Directorate General of Shipping has announced that the Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) Visakhapatnam will commence conducting examinations for Marine Engineer Officer (MEO) Class II (Part A & Part B) and Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) certifications from July 2026 onwards.
The initiative is aimed at bringing examination facilities closer to aspiring maritime professionals, reducing travel burdens, and facilitating quicker certification timelines. By decentralizing examination services, the move is expected to improve convenience for candidates while supporting their professional growth and career advancement within the maritime sector.
The expansion of examination facilities at MMD Visakhapatnam reflects the Directorate General of Shipping’s ongoing commitment to strengthening India’s maritime education, training, and certification ecosystem. The measure is also expected to contribute to the development of a skilled workforce and further bolster India’s position as a leading supplier of qualified seafarers to the global shipping industry.
