Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump on Wednesday on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, a development that could provide fresh momentum to ongoing trade negotiations between the two countries.
The meeting will be the first formal in-person engagement between the two leaders since their discussions at the White House in February 2025 and comes at a critical stage in India-US economic relations. Earlier in the day, Modi and Trump were seen exchanging greetings and holding a brief conversation as world leaders gathered for the summit.
Trade is expected to feature prominently in the talks as New Delhi and Washington continue negotiations on an interim trade agreement aimed at expanding market access and strengthening commercial ties. The proposed pact is viewed as an important step towards deepening economic integration between the two countries, with bilateral trade having grown steadily in recent years.
The discussions are also expected to cover cooperation in manufacturing, advanced technologies, energy security and resilient supply chains. Industry stakeholders are closely monitoring the negotiations, anticipating that a breakthrough could further enhance investment flows and business opportunities.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is expected to visit India later this month, signalling continued engagement on trade-related issues. The Modi-Trump meeting is also likely to review progress in broader strategic and economic partnerships, including collaboration in critical technologies and supply-chain development.
The bilateral engagement follows a series of high-level diplomatic exchanges between the two countries. During a visit to India last month, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described India as the “cornerstone” of Washington’s Indo-Pacific strategy and conveyed President Trump’s invitation for Modi to visit the White House in the near future.
Apart from his meeting with Trump, Modi is expected to hold bilateral discussions with several world leaders during the G7 Outreach Session, where leaders are deliberating on global economic challenges, trade flows, energy security and growth prospects.
