The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) on Thursday reaffirmed its commitment to advancing India’s Green Ports Mission by promoting clean fuels and sustainable technologies on the occasion of World Hydrogen Day.
In a post on X, the Ministry highlighted its active promotion of hydrogen-based technologies to power vessels, ports, and logistics, marking a significant step toward a cleaner and greener maritime sector.
“On #WorldHydrogenDay, we reaffirm our commitment to advancing India’s Green Ports Mission through the adoption of clean fuels for a sustainable tomorrow. Under the leadership of Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji, MoPSW is actively promoting hydrogen-based technologies to power vessels, ports, and logistics, paving the way for a cleaner and greener maritime sector,” the post read.
World Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Day is celebrated globally to raise awareness about hydrogen as a clean energy source and the potential of fuel cell technology. The day underscores hydrogen’s role in addressing climate change, enhancing energy security, and promoting environmental sustainability.
Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri recently described hydrogen as not just the fuel of the future but a cornerstone of India’s energy security, economic competitiveness, and environmental responsibility. He noted that India aims to produce 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030, supported by a strong policy framework and ₹19,700 crore under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.
“Every electrolyser manufacturer in the world is coming here because they see potential,” Puri said, highlighting India’s growing investor confidence and technological maturity. He cited projects such as Indian Oil’s green hydrogen plant in Panipat and competitive bids by Tokyo Energy in Vizag. The minister also referred to green ammonia tenders by the Solar Energy Corporation of India, calling green ammonia a “critical export opportunity” due to its logistical advantages over natural gas.
The National Green Hydrogen Mission, approved by the Union Cabinet on 4 January 2023 with an outlay of ₹19,744 crore, aims to make India a global hub for green hydrogen production, usage, and export, targeting 5 MMT per annum by 2030.
With these initiatives, MoPSW is driving India toward a sustainable maritime future powered by clean energy.
