Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has expanded its fleet further with the acquisition of five additional container vessels, underlining its ongoing spending spree in the box ship market.

The latest additions reinforce MSC’s strategy of scaling up capacity through a mix of newbuilds and secondhand tonnage, even as global container shipping faces volatile freight rates and uncertain demand outlook. Industry sources say the newly added vessels are mid-sized container ships, allowing the carrier flexibility across multiple trade lanes.

MSC has emerged as the most aggressive buyer in the container shipping sector over the past few years, capitalising on opportunities in the secondhand market to quickly grow its fleet and strengthen its position as the world’s largest container line.

The continued investment highlights MSC’s long-term confidence in container trade fundamentals and its intent to maintain operational flexibility amid shifting supply chain dynamics.
