Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), through its terminal investment arm Terminal Investment Limited (TiL), has resumed negotiations with Hutchison Ports over the proposed Omega container terminal project at the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
The renewed discussions follow a pause in negotiations earlier this year, bringing fresh attention to a major proposed expansion at one of Europe’s most important container shipping hubs. The resumption was reported by Dutch trade unions FNV Havens and CNV after a meeting with Hutchison Ports Delta II management on October 1, 2026.
The Omega project was initially announced in 2022 and envisages developing a large container terminal in the Maasvlakte I area of Rotterdam. Under the original proposal, the facility could feature five deep-sea berths with a combined quay length of around 2.6 kilometres and an annual handling capacity of 6 million to 7 million TEUs.
The proposed terminal is intended to expand container-handling capacity and support the long-term development of Rotterdam’s port infrastructure. However, the original project specifications have not been reconfirmed as part of the latest negotiations.
The Port of Rotterdam Authority is reportedly seeking clarity on whether the project will proceed before January 1, 2027. If no decision is reached, the site could be offered to other interested parties.
The renewed talks have also drawn attention to the future of employees at Hutchison Ports Delta II, where uncertainty over the terminal’s long-term plans has continued. Unions have called for greater clarity on employment and operational arrangements.
No final agreement or investment decision has been announced, and the terms and progress of the resumed negotiations remain undisclosed.
The outcome could influence Rotterdam’s future container-handling capacity and the strategic plans of two major players in global shipping and terminal operations.
