Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) achieved a significant milestone as MSC Ivana, a container vessel with a maximum draft of 16.35 metres, berthed successfully at PSA Mumbai’s Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals (BMCT). This marks the highest draft vessel ever handled at JNPort, reinforcing the port’s growing capacity to accommodate large mainline vessels.
The successful berthing operation was helmed by Capt. Sudanshu Shekhar, underscoring the expertise and coordination of JNPA’s marine team along with PSA Mumbai’s operational excellence.
A draft of 16.35 metres positions JNPA among a select group of Indian ports capable of handling ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs), a crucial step in meeting the demands of global shipping lines seeking deep-draft, high-capacity ports.
Commenting on the achievement, JNPA officials said the record-breaking berthing highlights the port’s commitment to enhancing efficiency, strengthening EXIM trade capacity, and supporting India’s growing role in global maritime trade.
PSA Mumbai (BMCT), the largest container terminal at JNPA, has been at the forefront of enabling larger vessels to call at the port by continuously upgrading infrastructure and deploying advanced technology for safe and smooth operations.
Industry observers note that this milestone aligns with India’s ambition to expand its maritime logistics capabilities, reduce turnaround times, and attract more mainline services to call directly at Indian ports.
With MSC Ivana’s record-setting call, JNPA has once again demonstrated its ability to compete with leading international hubs and its readiness to serve as a key gateway for India’s containerised trade.
