The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has achieved a major milestone by operating its first-ever direct container freight train service to Nepal, strengthening rail connectivity and boosting cross-border trade between India and Nepal. The new service marks an important step towards improving logistics efficiency and expanding freight movement through rail networks.
The container train connects key freight hubs in India with Nepal, providing exporters and importers with a faster, more reliable and cost-effective transportation option. The service is expected to support the movement of goods such as industrial products, consumer goods, raw materials and other commodities between the two neighbouring countries.
The launch is part of broader efforts to enhance regional connectivity and promote multimodal logistics solutions. Rail-based freight movement offers advantages including higher cargo capacity, reduced transportation costs and lower environmental impact compared with traditional road transport.
NFR officials said the new service will help improve supply chain efficiency for businesses in the northeastern region while creating additional trade opportunities with Nepal. The initiative also aligns with India’s focus on expanding rail freight infrastructure and strengthening economic links with neighbouring countries.
The introduction of direct container rail connectivity is expected to encourage greater use of rail for international cargo movement and contribute to the growth of India-Nepal trade by providing a dedicated and efficient logistics channel.
