Jawaharlal Nehru Port has introduced a series of relief measures to mitigate the impact of ongoing disruptions to shipping services between India and the Middle East, as regional tensions continue to affect vessel movements through key routes.
Shipping lines have been forced to cancel sailings, reroute vessels, and suspend bookings to several Gulf destinations due to security concerns around the Strait of Hormuz. The situation has led to congestion at Indian ports, delays in cargo movement, and a sharp rise in freight costs.
In response, Nhava Sheva has stepped in with financial and operational support for trade stakeholders. The port has announced a temporary waiver of ground rent and storage charges, along with significant concessions on reefer container plug-in fees to support exporters handling perishable goods.
Customs authorities have also eased procedures, allowing exporters to retrieve cargo that could not be shipped and move it back under simplified documentation norms. This move is expected to reduce yard congestion and provide flexibility to exporters facing uncertainty in shipment schedules.
Operationally, the port is streamlining cargo handling by allocating additional storage space, prioritising time-sensitive shipments, and accelerating documentation processes. Authorities are also coordinating closely with shipping lines to ensure smoother vessel scheduling and minimize delays.
Meanwhile, carriers are adjusting their service networks to maintain connectivity. Alternative routing options and shuttle services linking Indian ports with safer transshipment hubs in the region are being explored to keep cargo flows moving despite the disruptions.
Industry observers say the proactive steps taken by Nhava Sheva are helping stabilise supply chains at a critical time, ensuring that trade between India and the Middle East continues with minimal disruption despite the challenging geopolitical environment.
