India has taken the unexpected step of extending its ban on onion exports indefinitely, a decision set to exacerbate high prices in some overseas markets. According to the Reuters report, the ban, initially imposed in December and scheduled to expire on March 31, comes as a surprise to traders who had anticipated its lifting due to falling local prices and increased supplies from the new season’s crop.
However, the government announced late on Friday that the ban would remain in effect until further notice, leaving traders puzzled by what they perceive as an unnecessary move. Prices of onions in key wholesale markets in Maharashtra, India’s largest onion-producing state, have plummeted from 4,500 rupees per 100 kg in December to 1,200 rupees currently.
The report added that this extension impacts countries like Bangladesh, Malaysia, Nepal, and the United Arab Emirates, which heavily rely on Indian onion imports to bridge domestic supply gaps. With India’s ban in place, these nations have grappled with soaring onion prices.
The ban has also created an opportunity for rival exporters to capitalize on the situation by quoting significantly higher prices, leaving buyers with limited options. India’s strategic geographical advantage, with shorter shipment times compared to competitors like China or Egypt, positions it as a key player in the Asian onion import market. The traders estimate that India accounts for over half of all onion imports by Asian countries.
In the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2023, India recorded a historic high of 2.5 million metric tons of onion exports. However, with the ban now extended indefinitely, the future of India’s onion trade remains uncertain, leaving both domestic and international markets in a state of flux.
