Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has marked a major milestone in green shipping with the naming of OOCL WISDOM /, the world’s first 24,000 TEU-class methanol dual-fuel containership, at Nantong, China.
The ultra-large vessel was built by Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. (NACKS) and is currently the largest methanol dual-fuel containership ever constructed.
Measuring 399.99 metres in length with a beam of 61.3 metres, the vessel has a maximum carrying capacity of 24,168 TEU, representing a significant step forward in the development of next-generation environmentally friendly mega containerships.
The ship is equipped with a methanol dual-fuel propulsion system along with methanol-capable auxiliary engines and boiler systems, enabling operation on both methanol and conventional marine fuels. When operated on green methanol, the vessel is expected to drastically reduce carbon emissions, almost eliminate sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions, and significantly lower nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.
In addition to its green fuel capabilities, OOCL WISDOM incorporates advanced digital and intelligent shipping technologies, including energy efficiency management systems, real-time ship-to-shore data connectivity, voyage optimisation tools, reefer monitoring systems, and lifecycle structural safety management.
The delivery marks a landmark achievement for COSCO SHIPPING, OOCL, and China’s shipbuilding industry, showcasing the integration of large-scale vessel design, alternative fuel readiness, and smart shipping technologies in a single platform.
The vessel also highlights the accelerating transition of deep-sea container shipping towards decarbonisation, as the industry moves from concept-stage sustainability plans to commercially operational green ships.
