More than 60 shipping containers toppled off a cargo ship at the Port of Long Beach on Tuesday morning, with dozens tumbling into the water.
The incident occurred shortly before 9 a.m. when containers fell from the Mississippi, a Portugal-flagged vessel, according to port spokesperson Art Marroquin. The U.S. Coast Guard said around 67 containers ended up in the harbor. No injuries were reported.
Some of the containers struck the STAX 2, an anti-pollution vessel attached to the ship to capture emissions. Empty containers typically weigh between two and four metric tonnes.
The mishap prompted Pier G, one of six terminals at the port, to temporarily halt operations as crews worked to secure the site.
The Mississippi had sailed from Yantian port in Shenzhen, China, on August 26 before arriving in Long Beach, one of the busiest U.S. gateways handling about 40% of all shipping containers moving through the country.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the incident.
