The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) reported that its seaport was the busiest in the United States in May 2025, processing 774,698 TEUs.
This represents a 20 per cent increase over May 2019 levels, despite a 2 per cent dip compared to May 2024, a month marked by diverted cargo following the Port of Baltimore closure.
From January to May, PANYNJ moved over 3.7 million TEUs, up 6.5 per cent year-on-year (YoY)and 22.6 per cent above 2019 figures, highlighting the port’s continued resilience amid ongoing tariff uncertainties and supply chain shifts.
Additionally, the PATH commuter rail system recorded its second-busiest month since the pandemic, carrying 5.4 million passengers, a 7 per cent increase over May 2024 and reaching 75 per cent of May 2019 ridership.
- Weekday ridership averaged 205,305, maintaining over 200,000 passengers for the second month in a row.
- Weekend traffic neared historic highs: Saturdays averaged 122,040 passengers (second highest for May), while Sundays averaged 94,616 (third highest for the month).
Year-to-date, PATH ridership totals 24.1 million, up 7 per cent from 2024 and now 72 per cent of 2019 levels.
In April, the Port of New York and New Jersey marked a new milestone, celebrating the maiden voyage of the ONE Eagle at Port Liberty Bayonne. The 14,026 TEU capacity cargo ship is the first vessel to call the Port of New York and New Jersey from the Premier Alliance, a cooperation of three shipping lines: HMM, Ocean Network Express (ONE), and Yang Ming Transportation.
