    The Port of Hamburg has announced that C. Steinweg (Süd-West Terminal) will integrate a fully electric reachstacker from SANY MARINE into its operations as part of its decarbonisation efforts.

    According to the SANY, the full container reachstacker is equipped with a 422-kilowatt hour (kWh) lithium ferrophosphate (LFP) battery.

    These batteries are reportedly maintenance-free, long-lasting and more environmentally friendly than conventional lithium-ion batteries, as they do not contain toxic heavy metals such as cobalt or nickel.

    During a multi-week test phase, the reachstacker demonstrated its performance, operating for 8–10 hours on a full charge in demanding handling conditions. Its capabilities were found to be on par with combustion-engine trucks, with operating costs reduced by 40–60 per cent.

    The idea came about when the management teams of C. Steinweg and Bittermann, who already work together on maintenance and repair work at the C. Steinweg terminal, were discussing future-oriented forklift trucks. They quickly agreed on an extensive test of the SANY SRSC45E5 container truck.

    The cooperation during the test phase and its results convinced not only the employees but also the management, so C. Steinweg decided to invest in this innovative and sustainable technology.

    “At the same time, we are expecting a higher level of availability because the maintenance work will be considerably less,” said Thomas Friede, Operations Manager at C. Steinweg.

    “With the SANY SRSC45E5 we are consciously opting for an emission-free solution that makes an important contribution to our sustainability goals. As a company, we have a great responsibility to protect the environment and reduce our carbon footprint.

    “By using this all-electric machine, we will save more than 70 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year. At the same time, we are improving air quality and significantly reducing noise emissions, especially here in the urban environment of the Port of Hamburg. This is an important step towards a climate-friendly and resource-efficient future.”

    Last month, the Port of Hamburg reported on Mabanaft’s aim to enable the storage of methanol at Blumensand and facilitate the import of low-carbon methanol to northern Germany.
