Luka Koper of the Port of Koper, Slovenia, has bought four Konecranes electric Rubber-Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes to replace ageing RTGs in its container yard.

Koper also aims to build a new quayside and container yard with more storage capacity. The order was placed in Q3 2024, with delivery expected for Q1 2025 at the latest.

The Konecranes electric RTGs on order aims to reinforce a fleet of 28 Konecranes RTGs, of which 15 are fully electric, driven by cable reel systems. Luka Koper also operates 4 Konecranes Rail-Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes.

Edvin Boskin, Technical Manager of the Container Terminal, said: “Konecranes RTGs give us the high peak performance we need, and the cranes are reliable and easy to maintain. We have a long-term electrification strategy, and so does Konecranes, which makes this order a natural next step in the long-term cooperation between the two companies.”

The new Konecranes RTGs will be powered by cable reel systems linked to the local grid, similar to the electric Konecranes RTGs that Koper now uses. They will also have auxiliary batteries and the Truck Lift Prevention smart function.

Philipp Reiter, Regional Sales Manager, Konecranes, Port Solutions, stated: “Fully electric container handling operations are built step by step, with a commitment that that is unwavering and lasts for years. Luka Koper is set to grow substantially, and Konecranes is here to help.”

Recently, Konecranes completed the acquisition process of Rotterdam-based Peinemann Port Services BV and Peinemann Container Handling BV following clearance from the Dutch Competition Commission.
