The Port of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) has reported that September 2024 container volumes were the second busiest September on record, after only the pandemic-related freight increase in 2022.
The port handled 779,388 TEUs last month. It was the port’s seventh straight month of handling more than 700,000 TEUs.
The port maintained its position as the country’s second-busiest gateway for loaded goods, handling 4.38 million loaded TEUs in the first nine months of the year.
The port’s overall activity in September 2024 maintained its high year-on-year expansion. It was up 18 per cent from September 2023 and 25 per cent from pre-pandemic September 2019.
In the first nine months of the year, the port handled 6.58 million TEUs. This was a 14 per cent rise over the same period in 2023, and an 18 per cent increase over the first nine months of 2019.
In July, PANYNJ handled a total volume of 806,015 TEU, the busiest in the port’s history and its seventh busiest month ever.
