Samsung is strengthening its air cargo ambitions through the acquisition of South Korean cargo airline Woojung Air, signalling a strategic push to expand its presence in air freight and logistics.
The move reflects the growing importance of dedicated air cargo capacity for technology companies operating global supply chains. Reliable air freight services are particularly important for electronics, semiconductor components and other high-value products that require secure handling and time-sensitive transportation.
By bringing Woojung Air into its broader business strategy, Samsung could gain greater control over cargo transportation and improve flexibility in moving goods across international markets. Dedicated air cargo operations can help companies manage shipment schedules, respond to fluctuations in demand and reduce reliance on third-party capacity during peak periods.
The development comes amid continued demand for air freight services supporting global electronics manufacturing and international trade. Technology companies increasingly rely on efficient logistics networks to connect production facilities, suppliers and customers across multiple countries.
The acquisition agreement was signed on 12 October 2026, with completion expected by year-end. The purchase price has not been disclosed.
Woojung Air reportedly handles more than 60,000 tonnes of cargo annually and serves a wholesale customer base of over 1,200 freight forwarders. Its integration with Samsung SDS could combine Woojung’s cargo consolidation and airport-handling capabilities with Samsung’s digital forwarding platform, Cello Square.
The deal could also strengthen cargo consolidation through Incheon Airport, combining shipments originating in South Korea with cargo from other Asian markets. The companies plan to link their logistics systems to improve automation and airfreight competitiveness.
However, the acquisition’s impact on the wider freight forwarding market remains uncertain, particularly regarding whether Woojung’s existing customers will continue using its services under Samsung SDS ownership.
