Singapore-listed Samudera Shipping Line has placed an order for two new containerships at Chinese shipyards, adding a combined 6,000 TEU of capacity to its fleet development programme as the Indonesian-controlled carrier continues to expand its container shipping operations.
In a regulatory filing, the company disclosed that it had entered into shipbuilding contracts with Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding and Jiangsu Yangzi-Mitsui Shipbuilding, both part of the Yangzijiang Shipbuilding group. The two vessels are scheduled for delivery by 2030.
Samudera has not disclosed the contract value, propulsion specifications or the allocation of the vessels between the two shipyards.
The latest orders form part of the company’s broader fleet expansion strategy, aimed at strengthening its container shipping capacity and supporting its operations across regional and international trade routes.
The investment follows Samudera’s expansion into the smaller feeder vessel segment through its Japanese joint venture with Imoto Corporation.
In August, Blue Ocean Shipping, the jointly owned venture, contracted a 696 TEU containership at China’s Zhejiang Xinle Shipbuilding, with delivery scheduled for 2028.
Established earlier this year, the venture is majority-owned by Samudera and is focused on expanding its presence in Japan’s domestic and regional feeder shipping markets.
The latest newbuilding commitments underline Samudera’s continued focus on fleet renewal and capacity expansion across different segments of the container shipping market.
