San Antonio Terminal Internacional (STI), a port operated by SSA Marine and SAAM Terminals, achieved a noteworthy milestone with simultaneous calls from the 366-meter-long vessels, Maersk Essen and MSC Valentina.
This marks the second occurrence of such a milestone in the port’s history. The record was further embellished as the MSC Bianca Silvia, also measuring 366 meters, joined in for a third simultaneous call, sharing the berth with the MSC Valentina.
Despite a challenging year for the industry marked by declining volumes due to subdued local and global economies, Rodrigo Galleguillos emphasized that STI remains the forefront port terminal in the country.
Also, despite the delayed accomplishment, attributed to current conditions, STI successfully surpassed the 1 million TEUs mark for the twelfth consecutive year. Notably, this achievement coincided with the presence of Maersk Essen, docked at site 2 since 26 December.
“We are the only terminal in Chile capable of serving two Neopanamax vessels at the same time, thanks to our 930-meter-long wharf. This is a challenge that we can address with our new STS cranes, which let us operate at two sites with the same efficiency we’re used to,” stated Rodrigo Galleguillos, general manager of STI.
Handling the Essen and the Valentina, boasting capacities of 13,100 and 16,616 TEUs, respectively, required over 5,500 movements at the terminal. This underscores STI’s prowess in catering to such vessel types.
