SC Ports is expanding roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) operations at the North Charleston Terminal to strengthen automotive logistics capabilities and support rising vehicle and heavy equipment cargo volumes through the US East Coast gateway.

The expansion includes additional storage space, improved cargo-handling infrastructure and enhanced terminal efficiency aimed at accommodating growing imports and exports of automobiles, machinery and project cargo. Officials said the initiative will help streamline vessel operations and reduce turnaround times for Ro-Ro shipments.

The North Charleston facility plays a key role in handling automotive cargo linked to manufacturing operations across the southeastern United States. Industry analysts said the latest investment reflects increasing demand for specialised vehicle logistics infrastructure as automakers and equipment manufacturers expand regional production and export activity.

SC Ports noted that strengthening Ro-Ro capacity is part of broader efforts to enhance supply chain resilience and improve multimodal connectivity for customers moving cargo through the Port of Charleston. The development is expected to further support trade growth and reinforce the port’s position in the North American automotive logistics network.
