India’s sugar exports have touched 2.01 lakh tonnes in the 2026 marketing year (MY) up to February, reflecting steady overseas demand amid calibrated export policies.
Industry sources said the shipments were executed under the government’s regulated export framework, aimed at balancing domestic availability with international commitments . The 2026 marketing year for sugar runs from October 2025 to September 2026.
Traders noted that exports during the current season have been selective, with priority given to ensuring adequate domestic stocks and price stability. The Centre has continued to closely monitor production levels, cane availability and ethanol diversion before permitting outward shipments.
Major export destinations include neighbouring countries and select markets in Asia and Africa, where Indian raw and refined sugar remain competitive due to freight advantages and timely supplies.
Industry stakeholders said the pace of exports may depend on final production estimates, domestic consumption trends and the government’s stance on additional quotas in the coming months. They added that any increase in export allocation would be calibrated to avoid pressure on local prices while enabling mills to improve liquidity.
With production expected to remain stable in key cane-growing states, market participants anticipate measured export activity through the remainder of the 2026 MY, subject to policy support and global price movements.
