The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has welcomed Shri Sushil Kumar Lohani as its new Chairman, marking a new phase in the development of India’s inland waterways sector.

A 1995-batch IAS officer of the Odisha cadre, Shri Lohani brings extensive experience in public administration and governance to the role. His appointment is expected to provide strong leadership as India continues to expand the role of inland waterways in the country’s multimodal transport and logistics ecosystem.

Under his leadership, IWAI will focus on further strengthening inland waterway infrastructure, improving navigability and promoting greater use of waterways for efficient and sustainable cargo movement.

The appointment comes at a time when the Government of India is placing increasing emphasis on inland waterways as a key component of the country’s logistics network and an important alternative mode of freight transportation.

IWAI expressed confidence that Shri Lohani’s experience and leadership will contribute significantly to advancing India’s inland waterways sector and supporting the nation’s broader logistics and connectivity objectives.
