Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL), through its Shipbuilding and Maritime Systems (SMS) Division, has secured an order worth ₹467.25 crore from Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) for two Coastal Research Vessels (CRVs) intended for the Geological Survey of India (GSI).
The value includes ₹445 crore for construction, trials and delivery, plus ₹22.25 crore towards GST.
The vessels will be deployed for offshore geological mapping, mineral exploration, ocean environment monitoring and shipboard scientific analysis.
They are designed to support real-time studies and long-duration missions, strengthening India’s maritime research capabilities, the official statement said.
Technical features and scope
The CRVs will operate within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone in depths of 5 to 1000 metres . Each vessel will have a service life of 30 years, ecofriendly electric propulsion, 360-degree rotatable thrusters and DP1 dynamic positioning technology. Onboard, 22 types of scientific equipment will be housed across three laboratories for data processing and sample analysis.
The ships will also provide accommodation and facilities for scientists and crew to support extended research operations at sea.

TRSL has previously delivered vessels for the National Institute of Ocean Technology and other projects, including the ICGS Kamla Devi (FPV) and MV Ma Lisha (Cargo RoPax). The company has delivered over 35 vessels to date.
